The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Western Cape has strongly condemned a brazen shooting in Samora Machel that left three young people dead and one injured on Saturday morning, 24 January 2026.
The incident unfolded at approximately 11:55 in Oliver Tambo Drive, in the Philippi informal settlement area. According to police, the victims were seated inside a Suzuki Ertiga when unknown suspects approached the vehicle and opened fire without warning.
The attackers then fled the scene.
Tragically, three individuals, aged between 16 and 21, were declared dead at the scene. a fourth victim, a 19-year-old, was rushed to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment and is receiving care for their injuries.
The Serious and Violent Crime Unit has taken over the investigation. Samora Machel SAPS has opened three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. The motive behind the attack remains unknown at this stage, and detectives are working to establish the circumstances and identify the perpetrators.
In response, police have reinforced deployments across the area, with increased visibility, patrols, and presence aimed at stabilising the community, restoring public confidence, and maintaining law and order.
Western Cape SAPS spokesperson [or relevant authority, if named in updates] emphasised the service’s unwavering commitment to pursuing justice: “The SAPS remains dedicated to bringing those responsible to book and ensuring accountability for this senseless violence.”
