CIT Heist Turns Deadly as Police Clash with Armed Gang
Durban was rocked by yet another violent cash-in-transit (CIT) heist on the N2 highway, leaving one innocent woman dead, seven others injured, and the police locked in a deadly battle with a heavily armed criminal gang. The brazen attack, carried out by suspects wielding AK-47s and wearing bulletproof vests, led to a dramatic police chase and shootout near Durban University of Technology (DUT).
The Heist & Shootout
According to intelligence sources, the robbers ambushed a cash van early in the morning. As they made their escape, an innocent taxi passenger was fatally shot in the crossfire, while multiple others were wounded. The police, acting on quick intelligence, tracked the suspects’ vehicle to Moore Road, where a deadly gunfight ensued.
One suspect was shot dead, another critically wounded, while two managed to escape. The SAPS has confirmed that this gang was linked to a recent triple murder in Ntambanana and two additional killings, making them some of the most dangerous criminals in the province.
Getaway Vehicle Found – But Where Are the Other Suspects?
Hours after the attack, police recovered one of the getaway vehicles in Mariannhill. Inside, they discovered money bags believed to be from the looted cash van. The car had been reported hijacked in KwaMakhutha, raising more questions about the criminals’ network and resources.
A Growing Crisis – Are We Losing the Battle Against CIT Heists?
This attack is just the latest in South Africa’s ongoing war against CIT gangs. With at least 17 members in this syndicate still at large, one has to wonder: how many more attacks are being planned?
Despite swift police action, the reality is that these criminals continue to operate with military-style firepower, putting innocent lives at risk. The question remains: is enough being done to stop them before they strike agaian?
