PIKETBERG:- Bergrivier Municipality has once again confirmed its place among South Africa’s best-performing local authorities, proving that good governance, community pride, and steady development can go hand in hand.
At the National Good Governance Awards, held on October 2nd 2025 at the Gallagher Estate in Johannesburg, Bergrivier received three major honours, standing tall among the country’s leading municipalities.
National Awards of Excellence
- Clean Audit Outcome for 2023/2024
A mark of accountability, transparency, and sound financial control – achieved for the ninth year in a row. - Fully Funded Budget for 10 Consecutive Years
Reflecting financial discipline and long-term sustainability – no small feat in tough economic times. - Gold Award: Among South Africa’s Top 3.8% of Municipalities
Bergrivier ranked within the top 13 best-run municipalities nationwide, underlining its growing reputation for effective governance and reliable service delivery.
Celebrating Local Pride
At a Council Meeting on 28 October 2025, councillors and staff gathered to celebrate these achievements. The event was marked by heartfelt appreciation for the teamwork that drives Bergrivier forward — from its administrative centre in Piketberg to the coastal towns of Velddrif, Laaiplek, and Dwarskersbos, and the rural communities of Porterville and Aurora.
Executive Mayor Alderman Ray van Rooy described the awards as a collective victory:
“This is a proud moment for Bergrivier.” “These awards show what’s possible when integrity and community come first.” “They are not just about audits – they reflect our shared commitment to honesty, accountability, and service.” “Even when times are hard, excellence can prevail when we work together.”
A Municipality in Motion
Bergrivier’s success is not only measured in awards but also in ongoing development. One of the municipality’s most exciting current projects is the construction of a new shopping complex in Velddrif, set to become the commercial heart of the Bergrivier region. The development promises to bring new business opportunities and create a vibrant space where residents can shop, work, and socialise closer to home.
Municipal Manager Adv. Hanlie Linde said the municipality’s achievements are built on consistency and cooperation:
“Every department, every councillor, every worker and resident plays a role.” “These awards belong to all of us, the people of Bergrivier – who keep pushing forward with determination and pride.”
A Region Rich in Spirit and Heritage
Beyond its strong governance, Bergrivier is known for its natural beauty and community spirit. Each winter, the annual Berg River Canoe Marathon draws participants and spectators from across the country, celebrating one of South Africa’s most scenic and historic waterways.
From the farmlands of Piketberg to the fishing harbours of Velddrif and Laaiplek, and the quiet charm of Aurora and Porterville, Bergrivier remains a place where progress and tradition meet. A municipality that lives its values and continues to build a future of opportunity and dignity for all.
“Together we are building a prosperous community, one that reflects the spirit, strength, and pride of every resident.” – Executive Mayor Alderman Ray van Rooy
