Handmade Quilts Bring Warmth and Hope to Vulnerable Children & Elders
Reporter – George April
VREDENBURG: – On Tuesday, March 25, Badisa West Coast received a heart-warming donation of 36 handmade quilts, just in time for the colder autumn weather.
- These quilts will be gifted to a selected group of foster children and vulnerable kids who receive support through our services. However, the impact of these quilts goes far beyond just warmth, they carry messages of love, care, and human connection.
- This generous donation was made possible by the Inner Wheel Club of Saldanha through the Love Quilts Project.
- The quilts were handed over during a small ceremony in Langebaan to Badisa West Coast, ACVV, Child Welfare SA, and the for the Children non-profit organization.
More Than Just a Quilt – A Hug in Fabric
For children who have experienced trauma or loss, a quilt is more than just a blanket, it’s a symbol of safety and belonging. Many children in foster care have few belongings to call their own, making these quilts even more special.
The Love Quilts Project, a global initiative from the USA, not only provides warmth but also creates connections across generations.
In many cases, elderly individuals are the hands behind these intricate stitches, pouring their time, love, and memories into each quilt.
For elderly people, quilting is more than a hobby, it’s a way to give back, a source of joy, and a way to keep tradition alive. Many of the women who contribute to this project have spent decades quilting for their own children and grandchildren. Now, they continue to spread warmth to those who need it most.
The project encourages children who receive a quilt to draw a colorful picture, or write a message of hope on a special piece of fabric. T hese messages are then sewn into future quilts, ensuring that each child also
receives a heartfelt message from another child somewhere in the world.
A small gesture, but one that warms hearts, bridges generations, and brings hope. ❤️
