Story – SA Schools Athletic

Bloemfontein:- Rumé Burger, the rising star of South African athletics, has once again etched her name in the history books by claiming victory in the 100m final at the SA Schools Championships.

Competing under challenging rainy conditions, Rumé defied the odds to clock an extraordinary time of 11.43 seconds, breaking the U/18 100m record and storming to the top of the global rankings in her age group.

Despite her petite stature and youthful appearance,  Rumé’s indomitable spirit and determination have proven that size is no barrier to greatness.  Her relentless pursuit of excellence and ability to thrive under pressure have solidified her reputation as a ‘lion ruling the jungle of athletics.’

Rumé comes from a sporting family with a legacy of achievement. Her father, Philip Burger, was a renowned rugby player, and it is clear that the drive for sporting excellence runs in her blood. Her accomplishments on the track are a testament to her dedication and the unwavering support of her family.

Her performance at the SA Schools Championships is the latest milestone in an already remarkable career. Earlier this season, Rumé showcased her versatility by claiming gold in the 200m with a time of 23.69 seconds at the ASA Championships, becoming the only sprinter to break the 24-second barrier in the competition. Her silver medal in the 100m at the same event, with a time of 11.75 seconds, further demonstrated her consistency and class.

Rumé’s journey serves as an inspiration for young athletes across the globe, particularly girls, reminding them that hard work and determination can lead to extraordinary achievements. Her resilience in overcoming challenges, such as competing in adverse weather conditions, is a powerful example of what can be accomplished with perseverance and a fierce spirit.

As Rumé’s star continues to rise, her sights are set on competing on the international stage, where she hopes to represent South Africa and inspire even more young athletes to chase their dreams.
