The collapse, which occurred in May last year, claimed the lives of 34 people and left many others injured.
Human Settlements Minister Thembi Nkadimeng presented the damning findings to the parliamentary portfolio committee, revealing that NHBRC officials had cut corners in the approval and oversight processes. According to the report, the development was not properly registered before construction commenced, and due process was ignored when a single-storey structure was allowed to evolve into a multi-floor complex without necessary approvals.
The failure to enforce critical safety regulations has led to severe consequences, prompting disciplinary action against at least three officials. Furthermore, at least two of these officials may face criminal charges for their roles in the disaster.
The revelations have sparked public outrage, with calls for greater accountability and stringent oversight within the construction sector. Families of the victims are demanding justice, while industry experts emphasize the need for reform to prevent future tragedies of this nature.
CCN will continue to monitor the developments as authorities take action against those responsible for this catastrophic failure.
