Division Silences Our Communities
Reporter – George April
Mitchell’s Plain:- A social media post by NCC Party leader Fadiel Adams, has reignited painful debates across the Cape Flats
Exposing not only the heartbreak of violent crime, but also the deep divisions threatening our communities.
Adams posted the following to Facebook, after a week marked by gang violence and tragic shootings in Mitchell’s Plain:
“We lost more children yesterday than Ukraine and Palestine – that’s all I gonna say.”
The short but loaded message caused an instant storm online. One Facebook user, JudyMohlala, responded with a clear warning to the politician: “Fadiel, be careful – You will lose votes with this comment – Rather apologize.”
Her words sparked even more heated responses, some agreeing that Adams’ comment was insensitive, others saying the real issue was being ignored: the daily loss of young lives on Cape Flats streets.
Among those calling for unity and focus was Theo Stuurman, who wrote-
“Sort out your own house before you worry about someone else’s house. Don’t worry about votes, worry about our community that’s dying every day. Parents are losing kids left, right and centre. It only affects you when it happens to you. Kids are supposed to carry the parents, but now the parents are carrying theirs.”
Darren Drizzy Matheus also weighed in, frustrated by the online arguments:
“Someone please tell this Judy person this post got nothing to do with religion – it’s a political meme… Meaning gang shootings were heavy recently, and the government is doing nothing about it…”
– The tragedy is undeniable
While families plan funerals for children lost to crime, many adults are trapped in bitter Facebook arguments and political blame games.
– CCN’s message to the community
Every child lost, whether in Palestine, Ukraine, or here in Mitchell’s Plain, is one too many. But unless we set politics and insults aside, and face the crisis together, more families will mourn, and little will change.
Let’s replace division with unity, frustration with action, and online fighting with real community solutions.
