Reporter – George April
MAKHAZA:- An effective and rapid response by the Makhaza SAPS Hijacking Team, resulted in the recovery of a hijacked vehicle and the arrest of three suspects on Tuesday evening.
At around 18:15, officers responded to a report of a white VW Polo that had been hijacked earlier. Information led them to Level 2 informal settlement, where the vehicle was reportedly spotted. Upon arrival, SAPS members identified the car parked at a residence and immediately began discreet surveillance.
Roughly ten minutes later, three men approached the vehicle, opened its doors and boot, and began removing items. SAPS members acted swiftly, swooping in and detaining the suspects on the spot.
A search of the vehicle revealed an imitation firearm hidden under the driver’s seat. It was also confirmed that the hijacking incident had left the vehicle’s owner wounded, having been shot in the leg during the ordeal.
All three suspects, aged between 30 and 34, were arrested and face charges of possession of a hijacked motor vehicle and possession of an imitation firearm. A case docket of hijacking and attempted murder has also been opened.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court once formally charged.
This arrest forms part of the ongoing fight against Trio Crimes, vehicle hijackings, house robberies, and business robberies, which remain priority crimes for law enforcement.
