ON PRIVATE VEHICLE USE
Media Statement
The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) has dismissed false reports circulating on social media, suggesting that it instructed South Africans not to use their private vehicles and to travel with their families.
In an official media statement, SANTACO clarified that it has never issued such instructions and has never imposed any mode of transport on the public. The Council emphasized that any individual making such claims is not authorized to speak on its behalf. “The council strongly condemns these acts in the strongest terms,” SANTACO stated.
SANTACO also reminded the public that taxi services, like all paid-for transport options, remain voluntary. Commuters have a choice in how they travel. The Council urged media outlets to verify information before publishing to avoid misleading the public and eroding trust in the sector.
Furthermore, SANTACO highlighted that only law enforcement authorities have the legal mandate to enforce transport regulations in South Africa. Members of the public are encouraged to report incidents of harassment or unlawful enforcement directly to the relevant agencies.
SANTACO reaffirmed its commitment to serving the nation with integrity and transparency.
