This Could Have Been Any One of Us

Reporter – George April

TOKAI: – A peaceful Sunday evening turned into a nightmare for a local resident, who was photographing the Tokai fire near the Emporium, when he was suddenly and violently attacked.

According to eyewitness accounts, the man was confronted by a group, believed to be individuals occupying nearby land. Who wrongly assumed he was taking photos of their informal dwellings and the situation escalated quickly into a frightening mob confrontation.

As he attempted to flee the scene in his vehicle, the group turned violent. In a terrifying moment, a large object smashed through his rear window, just centimetre’s from his head.  Miraculously, he escaped without physical injury, but the emotional trauma of the experience is undeniable.

The victim has since opened a case of attempted murder at the Diep River Police Station.

This incident highlights a growing sense of fear and frustration among community members. Many are asking: How much longer before someone doesn’t survive an attack like this?

“This could have been me, my partner, my child,” said one local, shaken by the news. “We live here, we contribute to this community, and now we fear for our lives in our own neighbourhood.”

We urge all residents to remain vigilant and report similar incidents to law enforcement. Public safety must remain a top priority. The time has come to demand stronger action, improved policing, and immediate community dialogue to prevent further violence.

If you witnessed the attack or have any information that could assist the investigation, please contact Diep River SAPS or the CCN hotline.

Together, let’s raise our voices.

#One community    #One safety.    #One future.
