CEDERBERG – A devastating veldfire that ignited on Friday, 8 March 2025, continues to rage in the Cederberg region, with firefighting teams battling the flames in difficult terrain.
The wildfire remains active below Grootkrakadouw Peak, with two major fire lines—one above Grasvlei and another above Ghoboom. While the Brugkraal fire has been brought under control and is being closely monitored, more than 2,800 hectares of vegetation have been lost to the blaze.
As of 11 March, the fire was 35% contained, but thick smoke continues to billow from the steep slopes, making visibility and accessibility a challenge for firefighters.
Several organizations are engaged in round-the-clock firefighting efforts, including:
✅ CapeNature’s day and night service
✅ West Coast District Municipality’s shift units & water tankers
✅ Working on Fire (WOF) night service
Firefighting teams are currently focusing their efforts on securing and extinguishing hotspots. They are conducting fire operations along Jeep tracks near Heuningvlei and have deployed firebreaks and personnel to safeguard high-risk areas, particularly Heuningvlei and Boskloof.
Authorities urge the public to stay alert and avoid the affected areas while efforts to contain the blaze continue — CCN News
