Athlone – Two suspects are expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court following their arrest for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
According to police spokesperson Wesley Twigg, members of the Anti-Gang Unit acted swiftly after receiving a tip-off about ongoing shootings in the area. Acting on intelligence, officers conducted a search at a premises in Anthony Walk, Silvertown, earlier this week. During the operation, police discovered a 19-year-old inside the house. Upon searching him, they found a 9mm pistol loaded with 12 rounds of ammunition. He was immediately arrested for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
In another room of the same house, officers found a second male suspect. A search revealed that he had a .38 Special revolver with five rounds of ammunition in his possession, and he too was taken into custody.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the court appearance details or whether the suspects remain in custody. Investigations are ongoing as police continue efforts to curb gun violence in the area.
