Crime and Vigilance

Reporter – George April

Matroosfontein:- Residents are taking matters into their own hands as crime continues to plague the area.

The neighborhood watch (NHW) has recently made significant strides in combating cable theft, a crime that has left many households without electricity for hours, if not days.

Cable Theft Suspects Apprehended

In a recent operation, the Matroosfontein NHW successfully intercepted individuals responsible for the ongoing theft of Eskom cables. These thefts, occurring almost daily, have caused severe disruptions to power supply in the area. According to NHW reports, the suspects are from Bishop Lavis and Leonsdale but maintain strong ties in Matroosfontein, often visiting friends in the community. The NHW has emphasized the importance of transparency and has chosen to disclose the identities of those involved, citing the severe impact their crimes have on the neighborhood.

Theft From Motor Vehicles on the Rise

While cable theft remains a pressing issue, another growing concern is the rise in theft from motor vehicles. Authorities are urging residents to be extra vigilant, advising them not to leave valuables inside their cars.

“If it’s visible, you are already a target,” warns the NHW, stressing the importance of properly securing vehicles before leaving them unattended. Parking lots and open spaces remain prime locations for these crimes, with criminals taking advantage of any opportunity to break into cars and steal personal belongings.

A Community Fighting Back

Despite the challenges, the Matroosfontein community remains resilient. The NHW continues to work alongside local authorities and residents to strengthen security measures and reduce crime. The recent arrests serve as a warning that the community will not tolerate criminal activity, and they remain committed to reclaiming their neighborhoods.

Residents are encouraged to stay alert, report suspicious activity, and take proactive steps to ensure their safety and that of their community. As Matroosfontein stands together against crime, they send a clear message—criminals are not welcome here.
