WELLINGTON:- A tragic fire broke out in New Rest-Egoli, Wellington, shortly after midnight on Sunday, claiming the life of a woman and destroying approximately 200 informal structures, leaving many residents devastated.
Drakenstein Municipality’s Fire and Rescue Services responded swiftly, arriving just minutes after the fire was reported. Additional support from Stellenbosch Municipality, including five pumpers and three bush-fire vehicles, was deployed within 30 minutes.
Despite fierce winds from the Southeaster, the dedicated teams managed to extinguish the flames by around 5:00 AM, with crews continuing to damp down hotspots to prevent further flare-ups.
The Municipality extends its deepest condolences to the family of the woman who tragically lost her life in the blaze.
However, the Municipality has expressed concern over the actions of certain community members who attempted to harm a Stellenbosch firefighter and sabotage fire engines by slashing their pipes. The South African Police Service was called to ensure the safety of the firefighters and allow them to continue their crucial work without further obstruction.
In the aftermath of the fire, disaster relief efforts are underway to support the affected residents. The Municipality has assured the public that they will provide further updates as the situation develops.
