AUTHORITIES URGE CAUTION

Cape Town: – As families prepare for the Easter weekend, authorities are sounding the alarm, over a disturbing rise in criminal activity across the Mother City.
In the week leading up to the holiday, the City’s enforcement and emergency services made 311 arrests and issued over 64,700 fines and notices—marking a 21% increase from the previous week.
Emergency response teams were kept on their toes, with the Public Emergency Communication Centre logging 1,837 calls, many linked to violent incidents. Reports of assaults and motor vehicle accidents spiked dramatically, with increases of 40% to 50%.
“These statistics are not what we want to see heading into the Easter period,” said Alderman JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security. “While we understand people want to enjoy the holiday, we urge everyone to do so responsibly. Personal safety must remain a top priority.”
To combat the rise in crime, the City has ramped up its festive season deployment plan, targeting high-traffic zones, recreational areas, and known crime hotspots—while continuing regular enforcement duties.
Department Highlights:
Law Enforcement: 203 arrests, 5,406 notices issued
Metro Police: 63 arrests, including 11 for drunk driving, with 2,878 fines issued
Traffic Services: 35 arrested for DUI, 3 for reckless driving, 56,423 offences recorded, 260 public transport vehicles impounded, and 1,351 warrants executed
Among the successes, a standout operation in Lentegeur on Sunday, 13 April, saw officers pursue a suspect who discarded a plastic bag during his flight. Thanks to the sharp nose of K9 Kiana, the bag was recovered—revealing a 9mm pistol with seven live rounds, its serial number filed off. The suspect was swiftly arrested.
With the Easter weekend ahead, the City urges residents and visitors to stay alert, report suspicious activity, and avoid unnecessary risks.
“Enjoy the holiday,” added Alderman Smith, “but let’s all do our part to keep Cape Town safe.”
