Bloemfontein:- Thabo Bester, infamously known as “Tabu,” appeared in the Free State High Court in Bloemfontein today for a pre-trial hearing. Bester, along with co-accused Dr. Nandipha Magudumana, faces multiple serious charges related to his daring escape from Mangaung Correctional Centre in May 2022.
Bester, who had been serving a life sentence for rape and murder, faked his death in a dramatic prison fire. The scheme, which involved a body swap, was uncovered following an extensive investigation.
The main trial has faced multiple delays, including legal challenges by Dr. Magudumana, who continues to pursue freedom in the Constitutional Court. Both Bester and Magudumana are now charged with fraud, corpse violation, and aiding a prison escape. The duo was arrested in Tanzania in April 2023 and extradited back to South Africa.
In related news, Netflix released a three-part docuseries titled Beauty and the Bester, exploring the details of Bester’s escape and his controversial relationship with Magudumana. The pair attempted to block the documentary, claiming it was defamatory, but the court ruled that the story was already “firmly in the public domain.”
The Free State High Court proceedings continue to draw public attention as the case moves forward, highlighting one of South Africa’s most notorious prison escapes in recent years.
