CAPE TOWN:- Motorists travelling along Liesbeek Parkway on Friday morning were met with unexpected traffic delays, after a dramatic high-speed pursuit ended near the N2 bridge.
According to authorities, just before 10:00, officers on patrol received information about a stolen gold-coloured VW Polo that had been spotted in the area. Metro Police units, assisted by SAPS, immediately responded.
The chase came to an abrupt halt when the suspect vehicle collided with a security vehicle on Liesbeek Parkway. Four suspects attempted to flee on foot but were quickly apprehended by pursuing officers.
During the arrest, one suspect was seen discarding a firearm, which was later recovered with 10 live rounds of ammunition. Officers also discovered an imitation firearm inside the vehicle with its serial number filed off — later confirmed to have been modified to fire live rounds.
In addition, police found four mandrax tablets in the possession of one of the suspects.
The men, aged between 21 and 32, now face multiple charges including:
Possession of a stolen vehicle
Possession of an unlicensed firearm
Possession of a prohibited firearm
Possession of ammunition
Possession of drugs
The suspects are currently detained at Woodstock SAPS for further investigation.
A big thank you to Metro Police and SAPS members for their swift and coordinated response, keeping Cape Town’s streets safer..
