Western Cape:- Police have been praised for their swift action during two separate incidents that led to multiple arrests, and the removal of illegal firearms from the streets this past weekend.
On Friday morning, 3 October 2025, alert SAPS members in Rondebosch spotted a vehicle matching the description of a beige VW Polo that had been reported stolen in the Athlone area earlier in the week.
The officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver sped off, leading to a high-speed chase through Main Road and onto Liesbeeck Parkway. The suspect vehicle eventually collided with a marked Fidelity security car and came to a halt.
Two suspects who fled the scene on foot were quickly apprehended, while the two remaining passengers were arrested at the vehicle. Police recovered two firearms, 10 rounds of ammunition, two cellphones, and four mandrax tablets inside the car.
All four suspects were detained at Woodstock SAPS and face charges of possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition, and drugs. They are expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 6 October 2025.
In another overnight operation, at about 01:00 on Saturday, 4 October, Saldanha Crime Prevention Unit members were patrolling Vraagom Street, Diazville, when they heard a gunshot nearby. Officers immediately went on foot to investigate and confronted two suspicious men attempting to flee.
One of the suspects, aged 18, was found in possession of a 9 mm pistol with its serial number filed off and an extended magazine loaded with 27 rounds. He was arrested for possession of a prohibited firearm appear in the Vredenburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 6 October 2025.
Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Lebo Mokoena said the results showed that “visible policing and community cooperation are paying off,” adding that “every firearm confiscated represents one less potential tragedy.”
Local community safety activist Pastor Vernon Williams from Saldanha praised the police for their quick response.
“These brave officers are protecting our children by taking guns and drugs off the streets. We must keep supporting them instead of fearing the criminals,” he told CCN.
Police urged residents to continue reporting suspicious activity anonymously through Crime Stop 08600 10111.
