Motorists Urged to Drive With Caution

Cape Town:- The Huguenot Tunnel and Toll Plaza officially reopened this morning (Thursday, 9 October 2025) at 06:00am, following the completion of extensive emergency repairs and a final inspection by SANRAL and the professional engineering team on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the project team, all systems have been tested and are functioning well. Final cleanup and debris removal were carried out overnight to ensure the tunnel’s readiness for reopening.
However, motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution when traveling through the tunnel, as temporary restrictions remain in place while permanent structural repairs are being planned.
“We have completed the emergency repairs as prescribed and are satisfied with the inspection results. The tunnel is now safe for use, but certain sections will remain restricted until full restoration is completed,” the statement said.
The following measures have been implemented for public safety:
Restricted width northbound between Blocks 418 and 429 due to new jersey barriers and scaffolding installed at the incident site.
Speed limit reductions: 60km/h from VCC2 to the Eastern Portal, and 40km/h between PCC7 and PCC8 through the narrowed section.
Warning and road signage have been placed throughout to alert drivers to compromised road conditions.
These are temporary arrangements to enable safe passage through the tunnel while engineers prepare for future nighttime closures to complete permanent road surface, lighting, and structural repairs.
Motorists using the Du Toitskloof Pass and alternative routes are advised that further closures and traffic impacts will be communicated in advance, once the next repair phase is scheduled.
The reopening brings relief to thousands of commuters and freight operators who rely on the Huguenot Tunnel as a vital connection, between the Western Cape’s interior and coastal regions.
