Family and Community Unite to Recover Stolen Heirloom Amid Ongoing Security Concerns
Cape Community News (CCN)
Cape Town: – In a chilling act of grave desecration that has shaken the Kensington community, the final resting place of 72-year-old Lillian Jacobs was violated by robbers at Maitland Cemetery near Gate 4.
The incident, which occurred on or around November 28, has sparked outrage and a swift community-led response, highlighting the power of vigilance in the face of rising cemetery crimes.
Jacobs, who passed away in October and was laid to rest shortly before the desecration, had her grave dug open and coffin pried apart in a brazen search for valuables. Thieves made off with an imitation gold chain draped around her neck – a cherished family keepsake -and reportedly rummaged through her mouth in a futile hunt for gold teeth. The family discovered the horrific scene days later, describing it as a “nightmare” that reopened wounds from their recent loss.
“We are living a nightmare,” said a family spokesperson, echoing the sentiments shared with local media. “Lillian deserved peace, not this violation.” The desecration also saw the removal of the wooden cross and frame marking the grave, compounding the family’s grief.
Swift Action from Family and Community Yields Breakthrough
Undeterred by the trauma, Jacobs’ loved ones, bolstered by supportive neighbors, launched their own investigation. Their efforts paid off: suspects believed to be two local men, were identified, and the stolen chain was recovered, restoring a small measure of solace amid the devastation. This grassroots detective work, underscores the resilience of Cape Town’s communities, turning passive victims into active seekers of justice.
South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed a case of malicious damage to property has been opened and is under active investigation. “No arrests have been made at this time, but we are following all leads,” Twigg stated. Meanwhile, the City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department has initiated a parallel probe into the cemetery’s vulnerabilities, promising enhanced measures to prevent future incidents.
A Pattern of Despair: Not the First at Maitland
This is far from an isolated tragedy. Maitland Cemetery, a historic site in Cape Town’s urban landscape, has long been plagued by theft and vandalism, earning a grim reputation as a “haven for criminals.” Just last year, in September 2024, the Magwaca family from Langa reported their mother’s gravestone stolen. It was one of several such cases at the site, prompting urgent calls for beefed-up security like CCTV and patrols.
Earlier incidents include a 2016 destruction of a Milnerton family grave by thieves, leaving headstones shattered and loved ones’ memories defiled.
