Western Cape police have made several arrests in separate incidents across the Cape Flats over the past few days, addressing cases involving sexual assault, violence against a child, and illegal firearms.
In Khayelitsha, a 41-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday following allegations of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old boy. The incident reportedly occurred on Monday in Mandela Park. The suspect is scheduled to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court on charges related to the assault.
In a separate case in Mitchells Plain, a 39-year-old man has been detained for the alleged stabbing and wounding of a three-year-old girl. The incident took place on 29 December in Guava Street, Tafelsig. Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that the suspect faces a charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and is expected to appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Court once formally charged.
The arrest sparked unrest in the community, with members becoming aggressive and throwing bricks at law enforcement officers, resulting in one officer sustaining injuries. A docket for public violence has been opened, though no arrests have been made in connection with that case yet.
Meanwhile, efforts to remove illegal weapons from the streets continue. On Monday night, 29 December, members of Operation Lockdown III acted on information regarding a firearm at a premises in Kalksteenfontein. A search uncovered a 9mm pistol with no serial number, along with ammunition, hidden in a cupboard. A 50-year-old man was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Police hailed the seizure as part of ongoing initiatives to curb gun violence, under the banner #GunsOffTheStreets.
These incidents highlight the persistent challenges of crime and violence in Cape Flats communities during the festive season. Investigations are ongoing in all cases.
