Metrorail Western Cape has issued an update on its morning train services, confirming that most routes are operating as scheduled.

However, commuters traveling along the Cape Town-Fish Hoek route should prepare for delays due to a power issue affecting the line between Plumstead and Diep River.

Operational Train Services

Passengers can expect normal service on the following routes:

✅ Southern Line (Fish Hoek – Cape Town)
✅ Fish Hoek/Simon’s Town shuttle
✅ Cape Flats Line
✅ Cape Town to Langa via Pinelands
✅ Cape Town to Nolungile
✅ Wellington to Kraaifontein
✅ Cape Town to Bellville via Monte Vista
✅ Cape Town to Kraaifontein via Maitland
✅ Malmesbury to Cape Town
✅ Bellville/Mutual via Lavistown
✅ Bellville to Eerste River
✅ Strand to Eerste River
✅ Stellenbosch to Eerste River

Service Disruption: Cape Town – Fish Hoek Line

A loss of overhead power between Plumstead and Diep River has affected the Fish Hoek train service. In response, single-line working has been implemented between Retreat and Claremont, leading to expected delays.

Commuter Reactions

Stranded commuters have taken to social media to express their frustration.

Marianne Jacobs, a daily commuter from Muizenberg, shared:

“I left home early to avoid traffic, only to be stuck on a delayed train. We need better contingency plans for power failures.”

Another commuter, Bongani Moyo, who relies on the train to get to work in Cape Town, said: “Metrorail is our only affordable option. When services are disrupted, we have to spend extra on taxis, which we can’t always afford.”

Metrorail’s Official Response

Metrorail spokesperson, Thabo Ndlovu, acknowledged the inconvenience and assured commuters that technical teams are working to restore normal service.

“We understand the impact this has on our passengers and appreciate their patience. Our engineers are on-site assessing the damage, and we will provide updates as soon as we have more information.”

Advice to Commuters

⚠️ Plan for additional travel time of 30-40 minutes
⚠️ Consider alternative transport arrangements
⚠️ Check Metrorail’s official channels for real-time updates

Metrorail has assured passengers that further updates will be provided as the situation develops.

For assistance, commuters can visit their nearest station or contact Metrorail’s customer service helpline.
