Cape Flats Communities Ask – How Much More Must We Take?'”

CCN Report Team

Cape Town:-  Gunfire once again shattered the fragile night in Wesbank on Sunday and even on this Monday night.

Two people were killed, and two others wounded in a deadly shooting on Malgas Street.  Just hours later, another report of gunshots came from Ashbrook Crescent in Morgan Village, Mitchells Plain,  with two more victims rushed to hospital by private vehicle.

Local safety groups like #Safety First Unit Group# confirmed the events and warned residents to remain vigilant. But for many, the warning comes too late. The streets have become battlegrounds — and the community feels abandoned.

“These are not just numbers. These are people with families, dreams, and futures,  stolen in the blink of an eye,” said one resident who asked to remain anonymous out of fear.

What angers people most is that while their communities are under siege, the government is passing new laws that will disarm legal security forces, including private security companies that currently provide a lifeline in high-crime areas.

“How can you disarm security officers while criminals walk around with AK-47s?” asked a concerned resident. “We’re already under attack, and now they want to take away the little protection we have?”

As the crisis deepens, more and more people are calling for the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to be deployed. For many, this is no longer a political issue, it’s a matter of survival.

“We are at war with crime,” said a local community leader. “We need the army, even just for a while, to bring back some kind of stability.”

Critics argue that the military can’t fix deep-rooted social problems, but residents say they are tired of empty speeches, broken promises, and press conferences that lead to nothing. All they want, is action  now.

An Open Message to the National Government:

You are passing new laws,  but who is protecting the people?

You talk about security, yet you disarm those who help protect us. While criminals shoot freely in our streets, you weaken the very structures that hold communities together.

Communities demand

Permanent, specialized police task forces in high-risk areas.

Immediate SANDF deployment to stabilize crime hotspots.

Community-based crime prevention and youth programs.

A stop to the disarming of legal, registered security personnel, try giving us more protection, not less.
