Cape Town:- The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) has confirmed that arrangements for the burial of South Africa’s Ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa, have not yet been finalised.

Mthethwa, who passed away earlier this week in Paris, was serving as South Africa’s top diplomat in France. His sudden death has prompted messages of condolence from government leaders, colleagues, and members of the diplomatic community both locally and abroad.

Dirco spokesperson Clayson Monyela said discussions with the ambassador’s family are ongoing, and details regarding the repatriation of his remains and funeral arrangements will be shared in due course.

“This is a difficult time for the family and for the department. We are working closely with them to ensure the ambassador receives a dignified farewell,” Monyela said.

Mthethwa, a former Minister of Arts and Culture, was appointed as Ambassador to France in 2023. His passing marks the end of a long career in public service and diplomacy.
