WELLINGTON:- Firefighters in the Cape Winelands have been tirelessly combating multiple wildfires, with significant progress reported in the Wellington area.

According to Jo-Anne Otto, spokesperson for the Cape Winelands District Municipality, the fires near Dunstone and Rooshoek have been successfully contained. At Oaklands, teams managed to divert flames away from horse stables and plantations, ensuring their safety. In Witzenberg, strategic backburns have been employed to control key fire lines, with crews continuing to monitor hotspots and conduct mop-up operations. While the fire at Oaklands shows no active flames, the area remains extremely hot due to smouldering coals and tree stumps. In the mountains above Tulbagh, an active fire line is slowly descending, but poses no immediate threat to property.

Despite these efforts, the Freedom Front Plus has criticized the Cape Winelands District Municipality and the Western Cape government for their handling of the Wellington fires. The party alleges that the lack of aerial support during the critical phases of the fire led to extensive damage, with nearly 1,630 hectares of vegetation and crops destroyed. In response, local farmers and private entities mobilized resources, including a privately funded helicopter, to assist in firefighting efforts.

As of now, all fires in the Wellington area have been contained. However, the ground remains hot in certain spots, necessitating ongoing monitoring and mop-up operations to prevent potential flare-ups.

Residents and visitors are urged to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines issued by local authorities. The situation is being closely monitored, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
