19-Year-Old Suspect Arrested on Nine Murder Charges

Philippi East:-  Western Cape police have arrested a 19-year-old suspect in connection with the extortion-linked mass shooting that left nine people dead at a shebeen in the Marikana informal settlement last week.Detectives from the Provincial Serious Violent Crimes unit, supported by crime intelligence and tactical teams, apprehended the teenager on Friday in Zweletemba, Worcester. He is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court today, Monday 26 January 2026, facing nine counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday 17 January 2026, when three armed men entered the shack tavern shortly after midnight and opened fire. Six victims died at the scene, with three more succumbing to their injuries later – one en route to hospital, one in hospital shortly after arrival, and another several days later. Among the nine deceased were eight men and one woman, believed to be the owner of the shebeen.

Police believe the shooting was linked to extortion activities in the area. Since the incident, investigators have pursued multiple leads and conducted interviews, leading to Friday’s arrest.

Western Cape SAPS management praised the “relentless efforts” of the multidisciplinary team and indicated that the investigation remains active, with further arrests anticipated.

The Marikana informal settlement has long struggled with gang violence and extortion rackets targeting local businesses, including shebeens. Residents have repeatedly called for increased policing in the area.

The case will be closely watched as prosecutors prepare to oppose bail.
