Reporter – George April
Matroosfontein, Cape Town:- In a significant breakthrough against ongoing cable theft, the Matroosfontein Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) apprehended individuals responsible for the daily theft of Eskom cables in the area.
The suspects, identified as residents of Bishop Lavis and Leonsdale, have strong ties to Matroosfontein, frequently visiting friends in the community. Their actions have severely impacted the electricity supply, causing disruptions that affect businesses, schools, and households.
“In the interest of transparency and community awareness, we can no longer withhold the identities of these criminals,” the NHW stated. “The people of Matroosfontein have had enough.”
Cable theft remains a growing crisis in South Africa, costing Eskom billions annually and contributing to power outages, infrastructure damage, and increased maintenance costs. Despite efforts to curb the problem, syndicates continue to target the power utility, leaving communities in the dark.
Local authorities are expected to take further action following the arrests. Meanwhile, residents are urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to law enforcement or their local NHW.
This latest development highlights the crucial role that community-led initiatives play in tackling crime, as the fight against cable theft intensifies.
