For What?
HOPEFIELD:- I walked side by side with Gayton McKenzie during the 2021 elections, traveling through West Coast towns, urging people to vote for him.
Not just me, community members joined, packed in taxis, wearing his party’s t-shirts.
Then, in last year’s election, we did it again.
We believed in him, so we worked for him.
For what?
For a government that ignores our letters?
For leadership that blocks our calls and messages?
For promises that die the moment votes are counted?
I understood when people said, “Gayton is busy.” I accepted that he can’t personally respond to everything.
But what about his people?
Where are the ground teams who should be following up?
Where are the responses to urgent community issues?
In November 2024, I managed to secure a meeting with Human Rights officials about the lack of resources for youth sports in our community.
But the Sports Department, Gayton’s own portfolio, never responded.
This is the reality – When votes are needed, politicians walk hand in hand with the people. But once in power, those same people become invisible.
We fought for him, we worked for him, but he isn’t fighting for us, so what now?
