Bloemfontein:- The recent South African Schools Athletics Championship was a masterclass in organization and resilience, successfully executed despite challenging weather conditions.

Congratulations to the organizers for hosting such a well-run event, and to all the athletes who gave their best. Every medal won was a testament to hard work and dedication.
However, an unsettling incident has sparked a much-needed conversation about gratitude and sportsmanship. A young athlete, who secured an impressive tally of two gold medals and one silver, took to Instagram to label the SA Schools event as a “joke.” Such a statement, coming from someone who had the privilege to compete, raises serious concerns about respect for the sport and for those who make these opportunities possible.
To this young athlete, and to all those who may share a similar mindset, it is crucial to recognize that arrogance can be a downfall. Talent is a gift, and the chance to showcase it on a national platform is an honor that many dream of but few attain. Instead of belittling the event, it would be more fitting to express gratitude. For the opportunity, for the support, and for the chance to grow through competition.

For perspective, consider the many Limpopo athletes who were unable to compete due to accommodation and logistical issues. Their dreams were shattered, not by a lack of skill or effort, but by circumstances beyond their control. They would have given anything to be on that track, to experience the thrill of competing at a national level. For them, and for countless others, the SA Schools Championship is not a joke, it is a dream, a stepping stone, and an honor.
Young athletes should take pride in their achievements but remain humble. Humility, gratitude, and respect are the hallmarks of true champions. Winning medals is commendable, but character defines legacy. Let’s encourage our future stars to uplift, not diminish, the platforms that nurture their potential.
To all the young athletes out there: cherish every opportunity, acknowledge the effort behind the scenes, and most importantly, stay humble. The greatest champions are those who respect the sport, their competitors, and the journey that got them there.
A heartbreaking moment also unfolded at the championship. In a widely circulated video, a determined young athlete, Nécke Verster completed, all her hurdles but struggled just before the finish line. Watching her give her all, only to falter at the final moment, was truly heartbreaking. This is the essence of sport pushing limits, overcoming obstacles, and displaying resilience even in defeat. Her effort deserves as much respect as any gold medal.
Let’s celebrate the spirit of all athletes, not just the victories but also the courage to compete.
