Stellenbosch:- Two men, aged 21 and 28, were arrested shortly after 12:00 yesterday by the Stellenbosch Municipality’s Rapid Response Unit.

They’re in custody for illegal sand mining beneath the Bird Street/R304 bridge, a key connection between Cloetesville and Kayamandi.
The bridge is currently undergoing structural repairs, and any further disturbance places the entire project – and the public – at risk. Authorities say the suspects were caught in the act, digging beneath a section already flagged as structurally vulnerable.
“We cannot tolerate this kind of behaviour,” said Mr. Peter Jonas, Head of Infrastructure at Stellenbosch Municipality.
“Tampering with any site under repair, especially one as vital as this bridge, threatens not only our work, but the safety of thousands who use it daily.”
A case of Damage to Municipal Infrastructure has been opened at the Cloetesville Police Station. The two suspects remain in custody. No injuries were reported during the arrest.
Community leaders have voiced frustration over ongoing illegal activities in the area.
“This is not the first time people have risked lives for short-term gain,” said Cloetesville ward councillor, Ms. Annelize Makume.
“We need stronger partnerships between residents, law enforcement, and the municipality.”
Residents are being urged to report illegal activity immediately to help prevent further damage and ensure the safety of all.
“This is our home – we all have a role to play in protecting it,” added Mr. Jonas.
Let’s protect what’s ours – together.
