At the Maitland Cemetery

Reporter – George April

Cape Town:- An unsettling incident occurred at Maitland Cemetery on Wednesday, when multiple gunshots were fired during a funeral procession.

In response, members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) conducted an immediate and thorough search of all vehicles and individuals present at the scene. Authorities are now urging the public to exercise caution and responsibility when attending cemetery grounds. Firearms should never be discharged or displayed unless it is absolutely necessary and in full compliance with firearm license regulations.

Cemeteries are sacred spaces, meant for mourning, reflection, and respect. Visitors are reminded to remain mindful of others who are there to honour the memory of their loved ones in peace.

Maitland Cemetery management expressed their gratitude to SAPS for their swift and professional intervention, which helped restore calm and ensure public safety.

The community is encouraged to report any suspicious or unlawful activity on cemetery grounds to the nearest police station.

Let’s work together to ensure our places of remembrance remain peaceful and safe for all.
