Police Suspect Gang Link

Athlone: – The Athlone community is reeling after two men were murdered in separate but closely timed shootings in the Vygieskraal area on Thursday morning.
Both suspected to be linked to ongoing gang turf wars in the area.
According to Western Cape police spokesperson Colonel André Traut, the first incident occurred just after 8am in Pearl Street, where residents reported hearing multiple gunshots. Officers arrived on the scene to find a 38-year-old man with a fatal gunshot wound to the face. He was declared dead at the scene.
Less than an hour later, chaos erupted again, this time in Violet Crescent, just streets away. A 51-year-old man was ambushed and shot multiple times. He also died on the scene before emergency services could intervene.
Both crime scenes were cordoned off for forensic analysis. No arrests have been made as of Thursday afternoon, but detectives believe the murders are linked to a simmering gang conflict that has intensified in recent weeks.
“This level of violence is deeply concerning, and we are following all leads, and our anti-gang unit has been deployed to the area,” said a senior officer close to the investigation.
While police have not yet confirmed the names of the victims, sources say both men were known in the area and may have had connections to rival groups. Residents, speaking on condition of anonymity, say gang tensions have been growing in Vygieskraal, with shootings, threats, and drug turf battles becoming more frequent.
Community leaders are calling for urgent intervention, warning that residents, including schoolchildren, are living in fear.
“People are too scared to even go to the shop. The police presence fades, but the gangs stay,” said a local resident.
