NCC Demands Action.
Cape Town:- The National Coloured Congress (NCC) has slammed the City of Cape Town following a shocking incident in Manenberg.
A resident broke her leg after falling on a deteriorating staircase, at a municipal rental property.
The incident happened over the weekend of 22 June 2025 and, according to the NCC, highlights the City’s ongoing neglect of its public housing stock.
“This is a direct result of the City’s gross negligence and failure to maintain safe living conditions for working-class residents,” said NCC 1st Deputy Secretary General Dean Goliath.
When NCC representatives visited the property, they found contractors working without barrier tape or proper warnings in place. Residents Mr and Ms Pietersen confirmed they were never informed how long the repairs would take or that the staircase was unsafe.
The NCC has called for an immediate investigation into all City-owned rental properties, as well as intervention from the Human Rights Commission and the Public Protector.
“The City must be held liable. Our communities deserve safe, dignified living spaces—not third-class treatment,” Goliath added.
The NCC is demanding full compensation for the injured resident and urgent upgrades to all municipal rental units.
