Mother Breaks Silence on Alleged Abuse by Law Enforcement Officer
CCN Reporter
CAPE TOWN:- A Cape Town mother has taken to social media with a deeply personal and harrowing video message, alleging years of physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her former partner, a law enforcement officer.
In the now-viral clip, the woman, whose name CCN has chosen to withhold to protect her and her child’s identity — emotionally recounts a long history of violence and control. She accuses her ex-partner, a City of Cape Town Law Enforcement member, of severe beatings and threats, including one terrifying moment when he allegedly said he would “vrek” (kill) her if she ever left him.
“I was too afraid to speak before. I thought I had to stay because he’s a cop. Who would believe me?” she says in the video.
The clip has sparked widespread public outrage, racking up thousands of views and supportive comments across platforms. Many users are calling for an immediate investigation and justice, with hashtags like #ProtectOurWomen and #JusticeForMothers trending locally.
City Responds
The City of Cape Town confirmed that it is aware of the allegations. In a brief statement, it said the matter has been referred to the City’s Independent Internal Investigation Unit, and disciplinary procedures will follow if misconduct is confirmed.
“We take all allegations of abuse seriously, especially when it involves one of our officers. The law must apply equally to everyone,” the City’s spokesperson said.
Gender-Based Violence Advocates Weigh In
Local advocacy groups, including Women for Justice SA and Rise Up SA, have voiced support for the survivor and urged others suffering in silence to come forward.
“When the abuser wears a badge, it makes it even harder for victims to speak out. This woman is incredibly brave, and we will support her through the process,” said Liesel Daniels, director of Women for Justice SA.
According to SAPS data, gender-based violence remains one of the most under-reported crimes in South Africa, with survivors often fearing reprisal, especially when the accused holds power or influence.
What Happens Next?
The survivor has laid a formal complaint, and legal support has been arranged by one of the advocacy groups. The case is expected to be handled outside the law enforcement chain of command to ensure fairness and transparency.
Community Voices
Local residents expressed mixed emotions — anger at the alleged abuse, but pride in the survivor’s courage.
“She has opened the door for other women to speak. No one should live in fear — not from a partner and definitely not from someone sworn to protect us,” said Bridgette Samuels, a community activist from Mitchells Plain.
