Kraaifontein:- The Wallacedene community in Kraaifontein is reeling after a shooting on Tuesday, 19 August 2025, that claimed the life of an 11-year-old girl and left an eight-year-old girl and a 20-year-old man injured.
According to police, the children and young man were shot under circumstances still under investigation. Emergency services rushed the victims to nearby hospitals, but despite medical efforts, the youngest victim tragically succumbed to her injuries.
The Western Cape Police’s Serious Violent Crime unit acted swiftly after receiving information that the firearm used in the shooting was stored at a residence on Mapongwana Street, Wallacedene. Officers conducted a search at the property, confiscating a 9mm pistol with the serial number removed and 11 rounds of ammunition.
A 26-year-old male was arrested at the scene for possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition. He is expected to appear in the Bluedowns Magistrates’ Court once formally charged.
Community members have expressed shock and concern over the incident. “It’s heartbreaking to see children caught up in this kind of violence,” said a local resident who wished to remain anonymous. “We need more police presence and stricter control over illegal firearms in our area.”
Police are appealing to anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. The investigation into the murder and attempted murders is ongoing.
