Cape Town:- The Western Cape High Court has handed down heavy sentences in the brazen murder of Christine Gumira (31), who was gunned down outside the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on 25 May 2023.
Mandisi Mofu (27) received a sentence of life imprisonment for carrying out the execution-style killing, while his co-accused, Lukhanyo Meme (34) and Vuminkosi Vumane (39), were each sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment as accomplices.
The convictions follow the shocking assassination, committed in broad daylight, shortly after Gumira exited the courthouse. Evidence revealed that she had agreed to turn state witness in an unrelated murder case and was scheduled to meet with an investigating officer for placement into the witness protection programme on the very day she was killed.
During sentencing, Judge André le Grange praised the relentless work of the Provincial Detectives: Organized Crime Unit, noting:
“Were it not for your thorough investigation, these accused would have been free today.”
The ruling underscores the risks faced by witnesses who come forward in serious criminal cases, and the importance of continued protection measures for those willing to testify.
