As Police Tighten Grip on Gangs

Reporter – Felicity Jooste

Mitchell’s Plain: – In a major breakthrough against gang-related crime, police seized a significant cache of illegal firearms and ammunition during an intelligence-driven cordon and search operation in Lentegeur, Mitchell’s Plain, on Monday afternoon. The discovery included:

  • 19 firearms
  • 1,500 rounds of ammunition
  • 3 gun safes
  • 26 magazines
  • A stun grenade, silencer, and a shooting practice target board

The arsenal, concealed in cooler boxes and safes inside a residential property, is believed to form part of a coordinated plan to fuel ongoing gang violence on the Cape Flats.

While no arrests have been made yet, detectives have confirmed that several individuals are being questioned. The firearms will undergo ballistic testing to determine possible links to previous shootings and murders in the area.

Police have pledged that targeted operations will continue until stability is restored in affected communities. This latest seizure comes amid escalating gang tensions, where illegal firearms remain a driving force behind violence and killings in Cape Town.
