Cape Town:- A group of mothers from Overcome Heights in Cape Town chained themselves to the gates of Parliament, to protest against rising gang violence in their community.

They said government officials had ignored their repeated pleas for help, noting that public forums and imbizos often showed heavy police presence only to protect leaders, not residents.

The women described living under a nightly self-imposed lockdown from 5pm, with children unable to attend school safely due to constant shootings. Their action was supported by ActionSA, which delivered a letter to President Ramaphosa urging him to declare a state of emergency in the Cape Flats.

The party argued that only such a measure would mobilise the resources and law enforcement capacity needed, to curb the ongoing bloodshed and restore safety in affected neighbourhoods.
