Desiree Ellis Deserves Better

How Long Must a Champion Wait?

CCN Editor – George C April

Cape Town:-  As South Africans, we’ve celebrated Banyana Banyana’s triumphs with pride,  their victories, their resilience, and their unity under the leadership of Coach Desiree Ellis.

Yet, behind the applause lies a troubling question:  why is Ellis still working without a confirmed long-term contract?

Despite the SAFA NEC reportedly approving her new four-year deal, no final agreement has been reached.  She has been working month-to-month since her previous contract expired last year.  Now, with WAFCON qualifiers against DR Congo beginning this week, even her participation remains uncertain.

For many supporters, this situation feels deeply unfair.  Ellis,  a multiple CAF Women’s Coach of the Year winner,  has taken Banyana Banyana to heights few thought possible, including a WAFCON title and two World Cup appearances.

So why the delay?  Why the silence?
Some fear it’s more than just “administration.” There’s growing discomfort that gender and race might still play a role in how decisions are made.  If that’s true,  it’s not only an insult to Ellis, but to every woman who dares to lead in sport.

This is not just a football issue,  it’s a national reflection.  How we treat our heroes says a lot about who we are. Desiree Ellis has earned respect the right way, through hard work, passion, and results. It’s time SAFA shows the same respect in return.

Why not have your say!

What’s your opinion on the Desiree Ellis Headache?
Do you believe she’s being treated unfairly, or is this simply a case of slow negotiations?  Share your thoughts with us in the comments on “Contact Us” online –  your voice matters.
