Gugulethu Police Launch Murder Probe

CCN Reporting

Gugulethu:- Police in Gugulethu are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder after a security officer was fatally shot in KTC on Friday, 30 January. The incident occurred around 14:30 at the corner of Mjodo and Great Dutch streets.  According to Western Cape police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala, the deceased and a colleague were providing armed escort to a client, conducting electrical maintenance work in the area when they were approached by five unknown suspects.

The attackers, reportedly armed with rifles and handguns, opened fire on the two officers. One security guard was killed at the scene, while the second fled to nearby shacks for safety.  A firearm belonging to the deceased, loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition, was stolen during the attack.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing, Gwala confirmed.

Community members gathered at the scene later that afternoon, with some drumming in apparent mourning and protest over the violence.

A local resident, speaking to City Vision on condition of anonymity due to fears of reprisal, provided a slightly different account.  They claimed three security officers had been escorting a truck carrying workers from a private company involved in electrical infrastructure repairs.

“One security guard was shot and killed, another was shot and injured, and the third managed to escape unharmed,” the resident said.  They alleged a group of armed men carried out the attack but were unsure if a firearm was taken.

The resident expressed deep concern within the community, noting devastation over the loss of life.  They feared the City of Cape Town might suspend service delivery in KTC,  including electrical and other municipal work – due to safety risks for staff and contractors.

Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact Gugulethu SAPS or Crime Stop on 08600 10111. The motive for the shooting is not yet clear, but police continue to gather evidence.

This incident highlights ongoing safety challenges in the area, where armed attacks on workers and security.
