Cape Town:- Ongoing efforts by police to combat gang-related violence in the Mitchell’s Plain policing precinct led to a successful arrest on Sunday, 18 May 2025, when officers apprehended a suspect in possession of an illegal firearm.

According to police reports, members of Mitchell’s Plain SAPS were conducting stop-and-search operations in the Tafelsig area, which has been plagued by ongoing gun violence. During the operation, officers attempted to stop an adult male who tried to evade them. A search led to the discovery of a firearm and 22 rounds of ammunition in his possession. He was immediately arrested and charged with illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

In a separate incident, Malmesbury SAPS acted on information regarding a suspect wanted for attempted murder. Police searched an identified property in Chatsworth and arrested a suspect matching the description. Upon further investigation, a revolver without a serial number and 35 rounds of ammunition were found hidden under a mattress in a Wendy house on the premises. A 21-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The police have reaffirmed their commitment to removing illegal firearms from communities and curbing violent crimes through targeted operations.
