Worth R12 Million in Stellenbosch Raid
STELLENBOSH- In a major victory against the illicit liquor trade, a coordinated operation by the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Western Cape Liquor Authority, and the SARS Customs Unit has resulted in the confiscation of counterfeit and illegal alcohol valued at approximately R12 million in Plankenburg, Stellenbosch.
Acting on credible intelligence provided by the Western Cape Liquor Authority, police placed a suspected illicit liquor storage facility under surveillance. On Thursday, 16 July 2026, law enforcement officers moved in swiftly, uncovering a large stash of illicit liquor. The SARS Customs Unit took possession of the seized goods, while SAPS opened a criminal case docket for further investigation. No arrests have been made at this stage, but authorities say the probe is ongoing.
This operation forms part of broader efforts by the Western Cape Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Team to disrupt illegal trade networks that undermine legitimate businesses, threaten public health, and deprive the state of much-needed revenue.
The SAPS urged the public to continue sharing information that can help tackle such crimes.
