Over the weekend of 26 and 27 September 2026, two separate mass shootings at drinking/entertainment venues in South Africa killed at least 27–28 people (with the Carletonville/Wedela toll later rising to 18).Wedela / Carletonville (Gauteng West Rand) tavern attack
Around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday 26 September, eight gunmen armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols opened fire on patrons outside a tavern (reported as Dora’s Tavern) in Wedela Extension 3, near Carletonville. They then moved inside and continued shooting.
- Initial death toll: 17 (13 males, 4 females) declared dead at the scene; 15 wounded.
- By Monday 28 September the toll rose to **18** after one more victim died in hospital. Five of the injured remained in critical condition (upper-body wounds).
- Only four of the dead had been identified by late September (two South Africans and two Lesotho nationals).
- Suspects reportedly searched some patrons, stole cellphones, set two vehicles alight, and fled in two unidentified vehicles.
- Police launched a manhunt for the eight unidentified suspects.
- Motive remains under investigation (possible gang retaliation linked to an earlier incident, robbery, or illegal-mining-related activity have been mentioned as lines of inquiry). A multidisciplinary team of detectives, crime intelligence and crime-scene investigators is working the case. No arrests had been reported by 29–30 September.
Lwandle (near Cape Town / Strand, Western Cape) shisanyama attack
Around 1:46 a.m. on Sunday 27 September (roughly four hours later), gunmen entered an entertainment venue that also sells braaied meat (shisanyama, reported as KwaNdelu) in Lwandle and opened fire on patrons.
- 10 killed: (five at the scene, five later in hospital or en route); 11 wounded.
- Reports describe the attack as indiscriminate; some early indications pointed to possible business rivalry. The venue said it had stayed open later than usual for a Heritage Day gathering.
- Western Cape police established a multidisciplinary team led by serious-and-violent-crime detectives, increased deployments in the area, and opened murder and attempted-murder cases.
- No arrests reported.
Broader context and official response
These attacks form part of a continuing pattern of mass shootings at taverns, bars and informal entertainment venues in South Africa. Government officials (including the Minister in the Presidency) publicly conveyed condolences, noted the identification challenges, and urged people with missing relatives in the areas to contact police. Police in both provinces have emphasised ongoing manhunts and specialised investigative teams.
As of the latest available reports (around 29-30 September 2026), no arrests had been announced in either case, and the core facts above remain the established picture.
