Cape Town – A 51-year-old man is set to appear in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court, after being arrested for the unlawful possession of rock lobsters.
According to police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi, the arrest was carried out by the Maitland Flying Squad following a tip-off.
“Police members of Maitland Flying Squad responded to information and tactically approached an address in 20th Avenue, Kensington. Upon entering the premises, a search ensued, which resulted in the recovery of 434 rock lobsters, including 3,374 rock lobster tails,” Swartbooi confirmed.
Authorities are expected to investigate whether the haul was linked to illegal poaching operations, which remain a serious concern along the Western Cape coastline. The accused is set to face charges related to the contravention of marine resource laws.
The case highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to curb marine poaching and protect South Africa’s vulnerable marine life.
