Public urged to assist as CCTV image circulates

CCN Reporter – George April

Cape Town:- A bold theft at the Delft Police Station, has raised serious concerns about safety and security, even within the very institutions meant to uphold them.

A laptop was stolen from one of the station’s offices after an unidentified suspect reportedly walked into the building and exited undetected.

CCTV footage now circulating shows the suspect walking casually through a corridor of the station, wearing a hoodie. The suspect managed to flee before officers could respond.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that a theft case has been opened and the matter is under investigation. No arrests have been made as yet.

Crime activist Shirley de Bruin, who frequently works alongside Delft police, expressed her disappointment over the breach but voiced continued support for the station’s efforts. “There are many young constables who just graduated and started here recently. Mistakes happen. We’re still proud of their service,” she said.

De Bruin speculated that the suspect could possibly be a parolee involved in community service duties, which often include office cleaning. “But we can’t say for sure, it could’ve been anyone,” she added.

She encouraged the public to come forward with information, assuring that any tips will be handled with sensitivity and confidentiality.

Community leader Charles George said incidents like this are not isolated. “We’re seeing a disturbing trend of criminals boldly targeting police stations. It’s a clear sign that many no longer fear law enforcement or the justice system,” he warned.

Authorities are urging the public to assist in identifying the suspect.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS mobile app, where reports can be submitted anonymously.
