This morning, on her way to town, Martinique was thinking about making R300 last for today and tomorrow. She stopped at Usave to buy a few things, then decided to pick up a pumpkin at Wengs.
As she walked, a thought came to her: there are many people who have nothing, and she is still blessed.
On her way home, a group of children greeted her. One boy shouted, “Good morning, Teacher! Look at my new shoes!”
Approaching her, she noticed they were second-hand, but in his eyes, they were brand new. His friends were smiling just as wide, happy for him.
The boy asked Martinique to take photos of his “new” shoes. Their excitement was contagious, and she felt just as thrilled for him.
Watching the children run off down the street, Martinique reflected: gratitude is about appreciating what we have, not focusing on what we lack.
“Thank You, Lord, for showing me through these children that I must always be grateful,” she said. “Give me a childlike heart so I can always appreciate life’s blessings.”
Martinique emphasizes that everyone faces tough times, and this story is shared not for sympathy, but as a reminder that even small moments can teach powerful lessons in thankfulness.
