Bonteheuwel:-  Councillor Angus McKenzie has once again stood firm against gangsterism and crime in his community, declaring that “the fight back has only just started and we’re nowhere near stopping.”

In a video posted on his official page #AngusCares on Saturday night, McKenzie speaks with visible emotion and determination, addressing the ongoing wave of gang-related shootings that continue to claim young lives across Bonteheuwel and neighbouring areas.

His message comes just days after CCN reported on two gang members who were killed in a violent shooting last weekend.  Another reminder of the deadly cycle gripping the Cape Flats.

Despite the challenges, McKenzie’s tone is one of defiance and hope.  “We will not allow gangsters to rule our streets.  Our people deserve safety, and we will continue fighting for it  every single day,” he said.

McKenzie’s call for unity and courage echoes far beyond Bonteheuwel.  As communities across the Cape Flats continue to face gang violence, his words remind residents that rebuilding hope begins with standing together,  and refusing to surrender their streets to fear.

Tragic Violence in Gugulethu
Meanwhile, on Thursday, 9 October 2025, at about 5:55 pm, another act of senseless violence struck Gugulethu when a well-known dreadlock hairstylist,  affectionately known as Rasta, was shot and killed outside his container salon in Memani Street.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Wesley Twigg confirmed the incident and appealed to the public to come forward with any information.
Anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or has relevant details can contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS mobile application anonymously.

Editor’s Note

As a community news platform, CCN often reports on the tragedies caused by crime and gangsterism across the Cape Flats.  But stories like that of Cllr Angus McKenzie remind us that hope still lives among the fear –  hope built by leaders who refuse to give up on their people.

We acknowledge the danger and pressure that comes with standing against powerful gangs, and we salute McKenzie for his courage, compassion, and unshakable commitment to the Bonteheuwel community.  His efforts are a reminder that leadership is not about comfort.  It’s about sacrifice, action, and genuine care for those you serve.
