Cape Town:- Police have confirmed that four prisoners awaiting trial escaped from the holding cells at Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 20 October 2025.
According to police spokesperson Wesley Twigg, six men between the ages of 21 and 34 managed to flee custody. Two were re-arrested, but four remain at large. A case of escape from lawful custody has been opened, and all leads are being followed.
One of the escapees, from Hanover Park, is said to have a history of escaping police detention, including a similar incident in Philippi in 2023.
Nicholas Gotsell, a member of Parliament’s Select Committee on Security and Justice, criticized the lack of coordination between SAPS, the courts, and Correctional Services. According to him, the solution is a modern biometric system, to prevent such incidents.
