Matzikama:- A tense and chaotic scene unfolded in Vredendal North last month, when a routine police response turned into a life-threatening confrontation, involving a mentally unstable young man armed with a knife and, later, a fork.
According to police sources, officers were dispatched to Buitekant Street after reports that a mentally challenged man had attacked his mother during an episode. When officers arrived, the man had already fled to a friend’s home in Chris Hani Street.
Initial contact with him appeared calm, and arrangements were being made to safely escort him back home. However, moments later a friend ran outside in a panic, alerting officers that the man was attempting to harm himself.
When police rushed back inside, the situation escalated instantly. As one officer approached to intervene, the man allegedly turned the knife toward the member and lunged forward. In the struggle that followed, the officer drew his firearm and shot the suspect once in the side to stop the attack.
Officers managed to restrain him, but as they attempted to escort him to their vehicle, he broke free again, grabbed a kitchen fork, and reportedly attacked another officer outside the house. That member also discharged his firearm, wounding the suspect in the knee.
The suspect attempted to flee once more but was eventually subdued in Oliver Tambo Street, before being transported under police guard to hospital for treatment.
The dramatic confrontation left officers shaken, but no police members sustained life-threatening injuries. SAPS sources confirmed that several items were seized as part of the ongoing investigation, and that crime-scene experts processed the area shortly after the incident.
Community members who witnessed parts of the chaos described it as “terrifying” and “shocking,” saying the officers had “no choice but to protect themselves.”
The case remains under investigation. Police are expected to consult mental-health professionals as part of the follow-up process.
