Cape Town:- Further details have emerged following the tragic death of 20-year-old LEAP officer Lyle Thomas.
He was killed in the early hours of Sunday morning, after stopping to assist police at an accident scene on Jakes Gerwel Drive near Samora Machel.
According to police, the incident occurred at approximately 04:20 when Thomas, who was off duty at the time, noticed SAPS members attending to a hit-and-run accident. He reportedly stopped his VW Polo on the side of the road and got out to assist officers.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that the SAPS vehicle was parked on the roadside with blue lights activated while officers were handling the initial incident. While Thomas was standing with police members, a silver-grey Toyota Fortuner, allegedly travelling at a high speed, crashed into the back of the stationary police vehicle.
The impact caused the police van to overturn. SAPS members managed to evade the oncoming vehicle, but Thomas was fatally injured during the collision. The Fortuner continued forward before crashing into a nearby tree, where it came to a stop.
The 37-year-old male driver of the Toyota Fortuner was arrested at the scene and transported to a medical facility for a blood alcohol test. He was later detained at Nyanga police station and is expected to appear in court on a charge of culpable homicide. Investigations into both the initial hit-and-run and the fatal crash are ongoing.
The death of the young officer has sent shockwaves through the Bonteheuwel community, where Thomas was known as a committed public servant and neighbourhood watch member.
Ward councillor Angus McKenzie described the loss as devastating, saying the community is mourning a dedicated resident who served with pride and commitment.
City law enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason confirmed that the City is mourning the loss of the 20-year-old officer who was killed while assisting at the accident scene.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the officer’s family, loved ones and colleagues. This is a tragic end to a young life,” Dyason said, adding that the City’s Safety and Security Directorate will work to ensure that justice is served.
Lyle Thomas is remembered for his bravery, dedication and selfless service.
